Excellent restaurant ! I live in Japan and I really rarely find experience like this one! I usely don't take the time to write some review, but I think this chef and his mother are making a fantastic job and could be place at a higher level! Here you can find a lot more than in a standard restaurant on same price level. And also an amazing experience, higher than in a ten time more expensive luxury restaurant!I think this place could be crowded sometimes on high season, but stay patient, because this place is more for a good Japanese food experience (which can take longer) than for standard dishes..

One of the best meals we had! We were worried because we didn't know if we'd find veggie friendly restaurants in Takayama, but we were wrong! We had the most amazing dinner there. The chef was very friendly and prepare all in front of us all the dishes. The vegetables were super fresh and tasty! I'm still dreaming about the mushroom tempura!

A Michelin Star Restaurant by another name. The chef/owner who speaks excellent English and who returned home to Takayama after many years in Germany. His menu is a seasonal hybrid with dishes varying by the day depending on what is freshest. The entire enterprise is run only by him and his mother who attends to your every need. He is the only kitchen staff so depending on the time, your meal may take a bit to prepare. It is “tapas” style but the portions are large. It may take a couple hours to get all your dishes that he makes right in front of you (sit at the bar if at all possible), but make no mistake about it, it is worth the wait times ten. The pricing is almost suspiciously low for the quality and value of the food. Any local young Japanese man or woman looking to make a name for themselves in the culinary world, apply for a job at this restaurant immediately.

Such an amazing meal! My family of 4 came right when the restaurant opened and were able to get in for the night. We saw some people get turned away throughout the evening since they can only serve so many people! It is a mother-son duo running the restaurant. The son cooks while his mother tends to the tables. Service can be slow due to this, but I did not mind it one bit. The food was incredible. This is one of the best meals I’ve ever had. If I ever find myself back in Takayama, I’ll be sure to come back!

If Google allowed more than 5-stars, it still would not have been enough to describe how fantastic this place was. The owner/chef was very welcoming, and catered well to vegetarians. The food was some of the best we’ve had in Japan, and service was impeccable. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Good japanese Western fusion, reasonably priced too. Being the only Chef, you can feel(and taste) the effort in every dish he makes for you. However, place can be a bit smoky if you sit at the bar.

One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted amazing. It was great observing and talking to the chef / owner. Also, the cost is ridiculously cheap. In London it would cost at least twice as much.

Hiroshi is an exceptional chef and a really entertaining guy. We visited his restaurant in mid February on our three week long trip to Japan, the night spent at his restaurant was one of the most memorable of the entire trip! The food was delicious, his fried tofu and sashimi was out of this world. What made it truly memorable though was how entertaining and engaging our host was. He entertained us with stories about his life in Japan and culinary school in Germany, as well as explaining how his food was prepared. Afterwards we enjoyed a good few drinks with him. Besides the excellent food, what really sets this place apart from the rest of the restaurants we visited during our time in Japan, is how great a host the chef Hiroshi is.

This is one of the best dining experiences I've had in my life. Hiroshi is a charming conversationalist and skilled chef who makes every dish to order from an ever-changing menu (includes English translations). Go with his recommendations, or just tell him what you like to eat and you won't be disappointed!

Our expectations were high and this place exceeded them. The best resturant I ate in Japan (and I ate in quite a few, all had good ratings). Quite a few veggie options. Beatiful and creative presentation, even for Japan. Not cheap but great value.

Honestly? We toured Japan with our two boys, 17 and 11, for two weeks. The older one confirmed he dislikes Japanese food while on the trip. This was by far his favorite meal. Lest you doubt you share the palette of a 17 year-old, it was everyone elses favorite too. Tremendous care taken with every dish. Presentation flawless.Japanese chef, trained in excellent European restaurants, in Frankfurt. I know. This restaurant is off the beaten path. It's not a "crowd pleaser". But if you consider yourself a foodie, you absolutely must dine here. It's small, intimate, and exquisite. Not to be missed.

One of the best dinner expreriences in Japan! The chef and the interaction with him made all the difference. His love and passion for what he does shows in the food! Takes traditional japanese ingredients and gives them a twist! Do not miss if you find yourself in Takayama!

A MUST DO in Takayama!Hiroshi gave us our best evening in Japan and quite possibly of our past 5 months of travel! The food is hands down delicious and beautifully presented. You'll have a blast sitting at the cozy counter and watching him handle the food and cook. Fancy a twist on something on the menu? Tell him! He loves to work with your ideas.We were concerned that it was going to be expensive but it was not! Starters are 500-700¥ for things like fried tofu, smoked fish on veggies, etc. The mains are 1000-1800¥. He even has some home made Spätzle if you're craving something German... und er liebt es Deutsch zu sprechen! Visit here your first night because it's very likely you'll want to go again;)It's about a 8-10 min walk from the station.  Very easy!

Really great, creative food, perfectly prepared. Was a nice mix of Japanese and fusion with other cultures. Was one of my favorite meals in Japan. Oriented more towards western tastes with only foreigners in the restaurant the night I was there.

Amazing food prepared by one great chef. You will not be disappointed whether you come here for lunch or dinner. It's a thrill to sit in the bar and watch the chef work. The prices are also very reasonable - despite the high quality.

Best food experience I've had in Japan. We ordered half the menu, everything was delicious. Sit at the bar and chat with the chef, Hiroshi. He's fun and really passionate about his craft. Totally worth a detour.

Truly amazing place, best dinner in a 15-day trip in Japan. We were lucky enough to be alone the first night there (it was so good we went back the next night also) and see first row the magic happening in the kitchen. The chef is super friendly and explained us many things about the dishes (please order his corn tempura dish!). We ask for the vegeterian/vegan dishes and he also accomodated the cold ramen to be vegan!. Prices are super reasonable and quality/price is unbeatable.For sure we will come back if we go again to Japan!

A great meal and conversation with the owner/chef who trained in Europe and in his family’s (former) hotel. Can’t say enough good things about his attention to our dietary needs and his focus on fresh, seasonal and local ingredients. Everything is cooked to order - in front of you if you sit at the bar - so enjoy the leisurely pace after a day of sightseeing.

Heard alot of amazing things about this place. We went there by foot and spent 20 minutes walking to the restaurant to have a memorable last day in Takayama only to find it to be a 'reservation only' restaurant. Spoke to the chef and he turned us down towards the night without taking us in.For those who want to prevent this from happening, kindly please make your reservations through the hotels you're staying at or call the restaurant directly.There is no mention of any booking required on the corresponding websites and we had only found that out later in the comments. Hope everyone has a pleasant stay in Takayama!

Hiroshi was the best host. You must sit at the bar for the best experience. My best meal so far on my first trip to Japan. Just roll with whatever he feels like cooking. Grilled tofu. 5 stars. Sashimi. 5 stars. Shark. Duck sashimi. Hand made ramen. Hand made pasta. Salad. Plum wine. Sake. Cold beer. Cash only...no credit cards. Not expensive. I would have happily paid double.

OMG :) This is one of a kind experience. It's a bit different than elsewhere, more like tapas style Japanese cuisine. The food is prepared there and then and simply delicious ( full stop ). The chef is the owner and he was helped by his Mother :) We came in just a bit after opening on a Sunday night, no reservation needed although I can image that during more busy days a reservation is a must. Highly recommend visiting if you're making a stop in Takayama.

Quiet and relaxed atmosphere.The food tasted as amazingly as it looked. We had dinner (a bit of this and a bit of that) for three for around 5600 yen.The Obaa-san was lovely.If I ever come back to Takayama (and I hope so), I will surely pay them a visit.Totally recommended.

The food here is the most amazing thing you will ever experience, all the ingredients are freshly sourced and watching the chef cook is like watching an artist paint a masterpiece. We were lucky enough to dine on his 11th anniversary, five stars does not do this place justice, absolute culinary highlight of our trip.

Hands down one of the best meals we’ve ever had. Food and service both were outstanding. It was an interesting experience to be able to watch how all of our food was prepared, and with such finesse too! We felt welcomed and at home right from the start, and it was a pleasure to chat with the chef during and after our meal. Delicious vegetarian options too. If you’re ever in Takayama, definitely go here!

One of the best experiences we had in a Japanese restaurant. The owner is a passionate chef full of surprises. He cooked everything from scratches just in front of us. His cuisine is fusion Japanese/Western. All the plates were excellent. We had the chef recommendation, so we recommend you to do the same, that it will be without mistake.I loved the duck tataki, the smocked chicken salad, the fried tofu, the clams with the pasta and the corn tempura.

Small shop with a cozy atmosphere. Each dish is handcrafted by the owner himself; and if you sit at the bar, he'll introduce you to the ingredients as he makes the dish in front of you!Owner is very lively and talks to customers a lot. EXQUISITE FOOD. A must do!We had dinner twice in this restaurant (in a 2 days stay). On our first visit, it was a super quiet off-peak season day and we wonderfully turned out to be the only customers.It was one of our best restaurant experience ever as we could see the chef cooking to us and we were talking about life, food and the prep involved in the meal preparation (the chef speaks English very well)Food is VERY good, all locally sourced and price range is super super affordable.Really loved the friendly atmosphere as well as the creativity of the chef.We would go back in a heartbeat.Highly recommended !!!!!!!!!!

This was truly a 5-star experience, worthy of a Michelin star or two. Do yourself a big time favour and add this spot to your itinerary. Making a reservation is highly recommended, and sitting at the bar seat is absolutely best for solo/couple/small group travellers. English, Japanese and German are all spoken by the chef.

We had a wonderful night here. The chef and his mother played host and we were treated to an amazing night of good food and laughs. The chef had a lot of flair to his cooking and the taste was on point too. We ended staying pretty late, sharing a couple of laughs and a bottle of wine with fellow travelers from Netherlands. We ended the night with a shot of beefeater gin as compliments of the chef.

Best meal of our two week trip by a mile! We couldn’t stop raving about this place. Hiroshi cooked us an incredible selection of dishes, all of which were Michelin star standard. We even had to order one of them again (grilled fish in white miso sauce) as it was just SO GOOD! Hiroshi and his mother were perfect hosts, telling us about the dishes as they were prepared. Insanely good value for this standard of food (Hiroshi should increase his prices!!). We would come back to Takayama just to visit again!

Based on other reviews we sought out Sakurajaya in a very unassuming restaurant precinct. We arrived at the restaurant, which looked modest to say the least. We were blown away when we were offered to sit at the bar and chat to our host Hiroshi while he created our delectable meals. He used only fresh local produce prepared and cooked before our eyes. What a privilege it was to see an artist create our feast whilst describing his passion for fresh seasonable ingredients. A most memorable experience for all five senses. Highly recommended. You’ll miss out if you don’t eat at Sakurajaya whilst in Takayama.
